There are 3 basic types of Search Engines:
1. Primary Search Engines - Primary Search Engines are the ones that come to your mind when you want to look for something online. Google, Yahoo and MSN are examples of a primary search engine.
2. Secondary Search Engines - Secondary search engines are targeted at smaller, specific audiences, although the search engine’s content itself is still general. These search engines are useful for regional and more narrowly focused searches. Examples are Lycos, LookSmart, Miva, Ask.com, and Espotting.
3. Targeted Search Engines - These search engines are the most specific of the 3. They are called Topical Search Engines as well. These search engines are very narrowly focused to a topic, like medicine or branches of science, travel, sports, or some other topic. Examples: CitySearch, Yahoo! Travel, and MusicSearch, and like other types of search engines, ranking criteria will vary from one to another.
